More than 130 people came to Brill to take
part in our second Token Rally on Sunday 10th April. They came from as
far away as Cornwall and Anglesey and all were able to enjoy the fine
spring weather, stunning scenery, 'bacon butties' and a good days
detecting in over 120 acres of farmland!
It was not long before queues were forming
to record the finds with the County Finds Officer, http://www.finds.org.uk
and there were some interesting ones too. Eight Roman coins were found,
including a very unusual silver coin from the reign of Emperor Augustus(
27BC-14AD). A pair of decorated Saxon tweezers of unusual design were
also found and it was sugested that they were probably 'page turners'. A
silver sixpence from 1572 was found as well as a silver cut halfpenny
from the reign of either Henry l or Henry ll.
Amongst the other finds was a roman
brooch, a tudor hose hook, a sword belt fitting and a medieval
silver coin from Venice.
The event raised over £1600 towards our
Club Foundation Committee and may now join the Waddesdon Horse
Event (May 18th '08) in becoming an annual fund
raiser.
Plans
are to being discussed to hold the rally in Brill again next year, using
another area of land on the same farm - so watch this space!
